A lead engineer explained Tesla’s Cybertruck Horn upgrade

Tesla Cybertruck recently introduced the new “Superhorn” system.replacing the traditional trumpet-style horn found in earlier models. This was sent to the in-app upgrade option in the Tesla mobile app. This is an irreversible change, and now we know why.

update, in detail Wes Morrill, lead engineer for the Tesla Cybertruck, highlights the evolution of the car’s horn and sound system to better match the truck’s futuristic design and functionality.

The old horn, a conventional trumpet horn mounted in the front bumper, was phased out in favor of a new horn dubbed the “Superhorn”. The Superhorn, located in the front panel next to the passenger-side wheel, is a powerful speaker that also supports features such as Tesla’s Pedestrian Warning System (PWS) and Boombox functionality (available when parking).

A second PWS speaker is mounted near the driver’s side rear wheel exclusively for pedestrian alerts and Boombox sounds. The engineer explained that after Tesla received regulatory approval to implement the Superhorn, new Cybertrucks started making a distinct “BRRTTT” sound instead of the traditional “MEEEP”. This transition eliminated the need for the older horn, which is no longer included with newer models.

Earlier Cybertrucks manufactured before the Superhorn was approved, equipped with both a traditional trumpet horn and a Superhorn. However, Tesla has clarified that a rollback to the previous horn settings is unlikely, as the old horn is a standalone component that does not interact with the car’s controller.

Resembling a speaker, the Superhorn is visually distinct from the old horn, and its integration reflects Tesla’s ongoing efforts to improve the vehicle’s functionality and design. It’s nice to see that Tesla has prepared the Cybertruck for the future and included the old horn and speaker. It seems that the bet paid off.
