While I’m not a huge camper, I understand the appeal of a camper. The idea of being able to roam the world like a nomad, making a home wherever you lay your head, is adventurous and exciting. But custom-built vans, trucks and vans can be expensive. That’s why this Birmingham, Alabama local decided to create a cheaper version since 1991. Chevrolet 1500 pickup and if you want it he will sell it to you for 7500 dollars.
The truck itself is good. GM’s GMT400 C/K series were solid, reliable workhorses with bulletproof V8s, and they still look good today. This one also has a spectacular period-appropriate red interior. His bed was then outfitted with a fiberglass camper that the seller completely decked out in cedar. Oh yes.
When you open the back of the camper, you’re greeted by a log-style front door finished with cedar siding. There are drawers, a hole for a water hose and even what appears to be a doorbell. Open that door and you’ll find a bed and a worktop with a sink and a single stove. I don’t know how often I’d want to cook over an open fire inside tinder with little air flow, but it’s there for those brave enough.
However, that is not all. Most impressively, it also has air conditioning, recessed lighting, a TV, and a roof-mounted 100-watt solar panel to power it all. It could be a perfectly suitable camper if you’re comfortable with a cramped interior.
Since it’s a Chevy 4×4, it’s capable of off-roading, making it great for people who want to camp far off the beaten path. And it should be pretty reliable, even if the truck isn’t in perfect shape. But hey, $7,500 gets you both a pickup and a camper. It’s not clear how much of the camper conversion is reversible, but if you want to remove it, it shouldn’t be too difficult since it’s basically just the camper top and cedar boards. And because the seller is such a nice guy, he even offers personal financing.
