BYD Indonesia is expected to help electrify the taxi fleet

BYD’s arrival in Indonesia is expected to help electrify the taxi fleet. At least, that’s what PT Blue Bird, Indonesia’s largest taxi operator, thinks.

“We are very happy that BYD is now investing in Indonesia. We hope that very soon the price of electric cars will come down significantly,” said Noni Purnoma, president of Bluebird Group Holdings.

According to BloombergPT Blue Bird introduced electric taxis to its fleet in 2019. By the end of 2023, it had about 23,000 vehicles in its fleet, with electric vehicles making up only 1% of available vehicles. Based on this information, Blue Bird has yet to significantly increase the number of electric vehicles in its fleet.

“We are lagging behind in the implementation of electric vehicles. At the moment, the price for us is about three and a half times higher than an internal combustion engine,” Purnoma explained.

BYD’s arrival in Indonesia could push other automakers in the market to produce more affordable cars. The Chinese automaker has a reputation as a seller the most affordable battery electric cars in the global car market.
