Due to disagreements, the Erbil Parliament fails to elect its presidential body

Ninety-seven out of a hundred members attended the session, which lasted about two hours, while two out of three representatives of the Kurdistan Justice Group, which refuses to recognize the results, abstained. Elections.

Then the door was opened for the nomination of candidates to fill the position of the Presidency of the Assembly, which consists of the President, his deputy and the Secretary of the Assembly. Two members of the Democratic Party of Kurdistan (which won 39 mandates), two members of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (which won 23 seats) and two members of minorities ran for the mentioned positions.

But the majority of deputies, with the exception of representatives of the Democratic Party, left the hall, which made it impossible to elect members of the presidential body due to the lack of a quorum.

Preventing quorum

For his part, MP Ali Hama Saleh, head of the Al-Mawqif movement bloc (4 seats), described the course of the session as a weak scenario, which was agreed in advance between the two main ruling parties in the region, the Democratic Party and the National Union, to share powers between them as was customary in previous sessions.

He said that the deliberate abandonment of the session by the representatives of both parties, in order to prevent a quorum, was something that the two parties agreed on in order to disrupt the process of electing the presidential body.

He added that the representatives of his bloc will not participate in the vote on the election of the representatives of the two mentioned parties to those positions.

While the bloc of the Islamic Union (8 seats) announced that it has decided to stay in the opposition trenches.

But the spokesperson of the New Generation Movement bloc (15 seats) confirmed that the movement seeks to be an alternative to the two ruling parties by changing the existing political system.

After the session was interrupted for about three hours, the chairman of the session invited all the representatives to attend, but only the representatives of the Islamic Union and the New Generation Movement blocs attended, which prevented a quorum being reached.

The session, which remained suspended until further notice, was attended by nineteen foreign consuls from diplomatic bodies accredited to the Kurdistan Regional Government.
