The Guardian Media Group, the parent company of the daily newspaper of the same name, announced in mid-September that it is in negotiations to sell The Observer, the oldest weekly publication in the world, to Tortoise Media, a news site founded in 2019.
Members of the National Union of Journalists began a 48-hour strike against the project.
This strike coincides with the 233rd anniversary of the publication of the first issue of the newspaper.The Observer“, according to the union.
The union’s general secretary, Laura Davison, said the union was “requesting a pause in exclusive negotiations to allow more time to consider other solutions and to ensure that the decisions reached are in the interests of both publications”.
She pointed out that the “massive” vote for the strike “shows desire.” Journalists in publicly expressing concern about the future of newspapers.
The union official pointed out that the Observer newspaper occupies a “unique and important place in public life, and our members are interested in the next chapter of its history.”
The Observer newspaper was founded in 1791 and was bought by the Guardian Media Group in 1993. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it is considered the “oldest weekly newspaper” in the world.
As for Tortoise Media, it was launched by James Harding, former editor-in-chief of The Times and the BBC, in collaboration with Matthew Barzun, former US ambassador to the United Kingdom.
