The $5.8 billion Rivian-Volkswagen joint venture will initially produce the Golf EV. However, the most significant achievement will probably be the production of VW’s flagship electric vehicle (EV) from Project Trinity.
In 2021 Volkswagen increased the budget for the Trinity projectis looking to put its new electric cars into production. As part of the budget, the German automaker planned to electrify existing European factories.
At the time, Project Trinity was not just an electric car, but Volkswagen’s idea for a new line of electric cars.
“Future-oriented investments, which will focus primarily on e-mobility and digitalization, will for the first time account for the largest share of total investment at €159 billion, 56 percent or €89 billion. “Volkswagen expects that by 2026 every fourth car sold will have a battery electric drive system,” VW said three years ago.
Until 2022, the Supervisory Board of the Volkswagen Group adopted a resolution for the company Trinity plant ~$2 billion. This is essentially the green construction of Volkswagen’s new production facility in Wolfsburg Warmenau, the company’s headquarters.
VW planned to produce an all-electric sports sedan called the Trinity at its new $2 billion factory. Trinity was expected to roll off the assembly line by 2026. The German automaker planned to use Tesla-style megacars to produce the Trinity. This too aimed to achieve 20%-30% automation at the factory.
A month after announcing its plans to automate the plant, an internal letter to employees hinted that VW did is reviewing the construction of its new Trinity EV manufacturing facility. At the time, Herbert Diess, who had pushed VW’s transition to electric cars, left the company.

Since 2022, the Volkswagen Trinity plant has stopped. But Rivian’s joint venture with Volkswagen will breathe new life into the project.
“Whenever we see opportunities to accelerate development and get into the space faster, partnerships are a good way to accelerate,” said Thomas Schaefer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars.
