Starling became Plan B for the Kativik Regional Government (KRG). The KRG plans to use SpaceX’s Starlink terminals to extend internet services to Nunavik communities while it completes its fiber optic project.
“Engineers are currently in discussions with Canadian North Cargo about loading a 737 freighter with the gateway terminals,” commented Darryl Cobden, KRG’s director of administration.
The government launched its fiber optic internet project in March 2020. As of this writing, he has three more connections left to complete. KRG will provide Starlink meals to these communities. However, some believe that Starlink could compete with the government’s fiber-optic project.
“Fiber is still the ultimate goal. Starlink changed the gamenot just for Nunavik, but for the world,” Combden said.
The KRG is in the midst of expanding fiber optic internet services across the region. According to the latest cost estimate, the government spent $158 million to connect every community in Nunavik to high-speed fiber optic internet.
