Tesla China emphasizes safety heritage in latest marketing push

Tesla is ramping up its marketing efforts in China. This time, the electric car manufacturer is promoting its reputation for producing cars with the best safety standards on the road.

Tesla’s vice president of external relations, Grace Tao, emphasized the company’s information emphasis on safety in a post on Weibo. According to the executive, the Tesla Model 3 received the double five-star model of the “Chinese Electric Vehicle Fire Safety Index” and “Car Fire Safety Certification”. She also noted that Tesla has had no global recalls due to fire risks in the past six years.

Tesla safety at a glance:

  • Fire safety statistics: Tao stressed that a Tesla is only one-eighth as likely to catch fire as a gasoline car, and that includes incidents such as building fires and arson.
  • Top marks for Model 3: She noted that the Tesla Model 3 boasts the highest safety ratings, with 5 stars in both China’s EV Fire Safety Index and Automotive Fire Safety Certification.
  • Safety as standard: Every Tesla, from the affordable Model 3 sedan and the wildly popular Model Y crossover to the luxury Model X Plaid, comes standard with comprehensive active and passive safety features.

Constant commitment to security:

“We continue to push the boundaries of vehicle safety through constant technological innovation and rigorous production and manufacturing standards. Every year, our cars surpass themselves in active and passive safety, data privacy protection, fire safety and other areas. Buying a Tesla means purchasing the world’s best vehicle safety configuration.” — Grace Tao wrote in her post on Weibo.

Tesla China in numbers:

  • November wholesale: This is evidenced by data published by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Tesla sold 78,856 cars wholesale in November. This represents a 15.49% jump from the 68,280 that were wholesaled in October 2024.
  • Local sales: Media reports claim that Tesla sold more than 73,000 units in China in November, according to a report from Notice of CNEV. Most of these cars consist of the Tesla Model Y.
  • Since the beginning of the year: From January to October 2024, Tesla’s domestic sales in China reached 500,685 vehicles, an increase of 8.29% year-on-year.

Tesla’s Q4 2024 Efforts:

  • Other incentives: To further boost sales in Q4, Tesla China announced a 10,000 yuan discount on select Model Y variants. The company also extended five-year 0% interest financing until the end of December.
  • Ambitious delivery goals: Elon Musk said he believes Tesla China could meet or exceed its global deliveries in 2023. To reach that goal, Tesla needs to deliver a record 515,000 vehicles in this quarter of 2024.
