Tesla Cybercab Lead Engineer Eric E. recently shared some interesting information about the upcoming unmanned robot taxi. These include the Cybercab’s two-seater design, its efficiency and surprisingly conservative parts count.
According to Tesla Cybercab’s lead engineer, Cybercab is a two seater vehicle because the vast majority of miles today are traveled with only one or two passengers. This strategy makes sense, as Tesla can simply use its other, larger vehicles, such as the Model Y, to accommodate large groups that require a robotaxi.
“One of the questions we keep getting with this product is why does it have two seats? There are several reasons why these are two places. First, 82% of the miles traveled today are with two or fewer passengers. This product should be very effective. We have worked very hard to achieve this. And efficiency depends not only on energy consumption. It’s about the concept of cleaning, and the concept of reliability, and service,” noted Eric E.

Cybercab’s lead engineer also explained that Tesla emphasis on the efficiency of robotaxi also means that the driverless car will be made of several parts. According to Eric E., the Cybercab has about half the parts of a Model 3 sedan. That’s remarkable, since the Model 3 is already one of the most efficient cars on the road today.
“Two seats open up a lot of aerodynamic possibilities. This also means that we have significantly reduced the number of Cybercab parts. Today we’ll be shipping a car that has about half the parts of the Model 3. It also means that if you need to clean up the car as a carpooling asset, you really don’t have to worry about navigating multiple doors and multiple seats. You actually have what looks like a seat that is easy to clean automatically,” noted a Tesla engineer.
Eric E. shared other important details about the Cybercab’s design, such as its trunk, which is incredibly large despite the roboatxi’s small size. The Cybercab’s trunk can hold everything from a few golf bags to two full-sized carry-ons and two full-sized checked bags at once. It is also designed to accommodate some bicycles depending on their size, as well as a folding wheelchair.
