How Formula 1 the merchandising push continues (now I see name brand stuff at Costco), longtime partner Lego has announced new kits with cars from all 10 Formula 1 teams, a first product. That in itself is remarkable, but the cars themselves are not just replicas with different colors and stickers. Every racing car has different aerodynamic components.
During the product announcement, F1 presenter Will Buxton was unexpectedly but delightfully impressed with the level of detail in the Lego sets, which don’t cost as much as a game console. In an Instagram Reel posted by a Lego superfan @GirlBricksALotBuxton points out differences that may go unnoticed by new F1 fans.
“It’s different no matter where you start,” said Buxton, surveying the full kit. “Look at the floor guards on the Mercedes compared to Ferrari compared to McLaren– It’s completely different.”
Then Buxton notices the design of the side capsule between the same cars. Comparing art Mercedes-Benz and Red Bull both cars have undercuts, but on the Red Bull the design continues wide, “sliding to the rear seal point” on the rear sides of the car.
“On the Mercedes it goes straight down and you have the engine fin, but on the Red Bull it doesn’t,” he said. “Also, check it out. DRS activator? Absolutely different on both cars.”
Again, it’s not more than $100 A set of equipment which may contain thousands of pieces but the Speed Champions model, which retails for $26.99 and has less than 300 parts.
And every time Buxton looks at the next car below, he notices something new.
“Then you go to Ferrari, and unlike Mercedes, you have an undercut (and) a completely different side capsule design,” he said. “And you have side impact designs on the McLaren.”
All new sets in the Lego x Formula 1 collection will go on sale by early 2025. The City and DUPLO sets will be available from January 1st, followed by the amazingly accurate Speed Champions sets on March 1st and Collectibles on May 1st.
Lego Speed Champions, however, is already available for pre-order in some regions, including the US. And at such an affordable price, you can pick up a full set of F1 Speed Champions – two of them in fact – for less than that Liebherr crawler crane. That’s more than enough cars to build your own Drive to survive story lines on your living room floor. With children, of course.
