The Tesla skeptic from “Big Short” is recanting his position for this important reason

Tesla skeptic Danny Moses, who was featured in the movie “The Big Short,” revealed that he refused to short the electric car maker’s stock for this important reason.

Moses appeared on CNBC to talk about the stock, and when asked about his short position in Tesla, he said he got out of it.

Here’s why:

“When the story goes from the non-fundamental to the technical… then I leave the story. It’s very hard to short a name that doesn’t trade on fundamentals. It’s also hard to name a long name when everything is on promises.”

Tesla trades on its technology, its prowess as an electric car maker, and more, and has tremendous value.

For example, company shares significantly exploded with the news of Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential electionand the reasoning was all about the potential regulatory advantages Tesla could have.

The market is not perfect. There have been times when Tesla beat supply estimates and the stock fell.

Despite Moses’ decision to exit his short position, he remains skeptical of the company. He said CEO Elon Musk promised things to consumers and investors that “never materialized.”

He is also skeptical that Musk will be able to do what he says in his new position at Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Moses is not the first outspoken Tesla critic to leave his position after being burned by the stock’s performance. Jim Chanos is one of the most prominent investors who shorted Tesla and eventually decided to exit the position:

Tesla bear who claimed TSLA is worth $0, credits Elon Musk with ‘job well done’

After Massive growth for Tesla in 2021more than 50 percent of short sellers also abandoned their short positions.
