Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned last week that Trump’s tariff plan would have serious consequences for both countries and indicated the possibility of taking measures in response to Trump’s plan.
Trump wants to use the tariffs as a tool to get Mexico and Canada to help stop the smuggling of drugs into the United States, particularly the deadly opioid fentanyl, as well as immigrants who cross into his country illegally.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: “We talked about many important issues that require both countries to work together to solve them, such as the fentanyl and drug crisis that has claimed many lives as a result of illegal immigration, fair trade agreements that are not putting American workers at risk and the huge trade deficit the US suffers with Canada.
He added: “Trudeau has pledged to work with us to end this horrific destruction of American families.”
For his part, Trudeau wrote in a post on the X platform that he looks forward to working with Trump.
“Thank you for dinner last night, President Trump. I look forward to the work we can do together, again,” Trudeau said.
A Canadian government official, who requested anonymity, told Reuters the atmosphere at the dinner was positive and the meeting touched on many topics and lasted three hours.
Many economists have warned that Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on imports will lead to higher costs for American consumers.
Trump said tariffs on trading partners would help protect American manufacturers and promote local job growth.
In a separate post, Trump called on BRICS member countries to pledge not to introduce a new currency or support another currency to replace the dollar, warning of 100 percent tariffs.
The term BRICS refers to the original members of the intergovernmental organization: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The organization also includes Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the UAE.
Trump wrote on his social platform, Truth Social: “We want these countries to commit not to create a new BRICS currency or support any other currency to replace the big dollar or face 100 percent tariffs, and they should expect to bid goodbye to the wonderful American economy.”
