As a search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer enters day four, detectives across the country are working overtime to gather information that will bring the suspect to justice.
Thompson, who was shot outside a New York hotel shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday, died less than 30 minutes later. Detectives are investigating a number of tracks the suspect left behind, including a backpack, a bottle of water, a phone and shell casings.
Philip Holloway, attorney and legal analyst with a background in law enforcement, broke down what New York and federal investigators might be thinking during an interview with Fox News Digital on Saturday.
Although national media coverage has focused on the search for the suspect, who is believed to have left New York, Holloway said the gunman may not have acted alone.

“Obviously, if the killer had any assistance before, during or after the murder, law enforcement would want to build a strong case against any such accomplice,” the former police officer explained. “If they look at someone like that, they don’t want to alert them to that fact.”
“The bigger question is how does anyone know exactly what time they’re going to be out the door at 6:45 in the morning?”
Holloway, a frequent guest on Fox News, also addressed speculation about whether police had a suspect named. During a press conference on Saturday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams hinted that authorities may know the identity of the attacker.
“We don’t want to release it now,” Adams said. “If we do that, we’re basically tipping the person we’re looking for and we don’t want to give them an advantage at all.”
“Let him continue to believe that he can hide behind a mask,” added the mayor. “We have uncovered his face. We will find out who he is, and bring him to justice.”

Holloway told Fox News Digital that the intent was to protect the investigation.
“The only reason to withhold the suspect’s name, assuming the name is known — and I assume the name is, in fact, known — is to protect some ongoing aspect of the investigation,” Holloway said. “And, to that point, what makes the most logical sense is for the authorities to consider whether or not any other person(s) could be involved.”
Although Holloway is not involved in the investigation, he told Fox News Digital that he is “about 90% certain” that one or two other suspects are involved in the murder.
But he also stressed that anything is possible this early in the investigation.

“When we only have puzzle pieces, the imagination tries to fill in the gaps,” Holloway said. “At this point, almost anything is possible. We will have a clearer picture in the coming hours and days.
