In itself, extreme weather can be a beautiful sight, terrifyingly dramatic and, yes, often deadly. But advertising a weather damaged car like a “sensational possibility of flooding?” It is bold. Perhaps something got lost in translation, or a once-in-a-generation thunderstorm is as rare as McLaren be attacked?
The answer is negative.
The supercar in question is a 2022 model year McLaren 720S Coupe. This is the base model. Yes, it cost $301,500 new, but in its current condition, the 720S doesn’t come close to “great condition and looks” auction list claims. The proof is in their own photos and, oh, the fact that it’s paid for by the insurer.
The McLaren is estimated to have 4,000 km (2,485 miles) on the odometer. May be more, may be less. No one is sure because the car won’t start. The engine will crank manually, but the vehicle is marked as “not moving”. Great condition, right?
The exterior looks well-maintained, but there are blemishes, including a missing “s” badge, scratches under the front bumper, and what may be scratches or scuffs on the door panels. The seller’s images do not provide much clarity on this matter. but hey no visible rust! The interior looks fine except for a noticeable water stain on the driver’s headrest. The images also won’t tell you if the leather or upholstery smells like mold.
Located in the village UAE but sold through Australian online auction Autorola Marketplace, the McLaren survived the Gulf floods that occurred in April 2024. A year’s worth of rain fell in the region in one day. Some areas are experienced two years’ worth of showers, which is absolutely stupid.
At least 46 people have died in the floods in the Middle East, most of them in Oman, where 19 of the 20 reported deaths were children. Others remain missing. Circumstances are sadder than what the auction ad would suggest, but I guess that’s why I’m not in the sales business.
Water-damaged cars always require personal care reviews before you buy McLaren 720s are available by appointment. Any potential bidder should plan for it as the car will be sold as is. Note that “as is” can also mean not being able to close any doors without getting trapped. Most likely due to the fact that the McLaren is under wraps, there are no images of the McLaren with the doors or hood fully closed. And the rear spoiler seems to be stuck in the rack, active aero situation.
With three days left, the top bid is currently A$75,700 ($49,232), which seems fair for the life-size exotic car. But just imagine how sensational it would look as driveway decor instead of a garden gnome.
